Coconut milk is an extremely important ingredient in Indonesian cooking. However, extracting coconut milk is not entirely familiar for some. Here are some facts and knowledge:
- A medium coconut weighs about 450-500g.
- We can get about 200-250g of thick coconut milk from it.
- To extract thick coconut milk, we first put grated coconut into a small cotton bag then squeeze out the milk. We will get about 250ml of thick coconut milk.
- To extract thin coconut milk, we measure out the amount of water needed (that is, however much thin coconut milk we need, we measure out that same amount of water), put the bag of squeezed grated coconut into it and squeeze out thin coconut milk.
- Once grated coconut is bough, it has to be squeezed into coconut milk immediately. If stored in the fridge, it will become dry, and hence, less milk can be squeezed from it.
- Store coconut milk in the fridge or else it will turn sour. Add a little salt to it before placing it in to prolong its storage to a day.
